Unfortunately, even specialists in surgery are generally unable to perform pediatric surgical procedures, as they often do not have the specialist knowledge and experience required - otherwise there would be no years of training in pediatric and adolescent surgery or the specialist in pediatric and adolescent surgery would be unnecessary. For this reason, you can essentially only obtain these benefits from either private pediatric surgeons like me or the few pediatric surgical outpatient clinics in Austria. For consultations, expert opinions etc. we usually charge according to the time required. In doing so, we adhere to the current fee recommendation of the Austrian medical association.
A part of the costs (80% of the corresponding health insurance rate) can be reclaimed from the Austrian social health insurance company in the case of statutory health insurance patients.
We will gladly help you with the reclaim - a corresponding form is attached to every invoice or we do directly reclaim for you.
If you have additional health insurance, sometimes we may also settle directly with your insurance company. If this is not the case, we recommend always to obtain a coverage commitment from your insurance company.
Recently we became a LARA partner of UNIQA. As a LARA partner policy holder, you can use our services without the inconvenience of prepayment, no more submissions to the GKK, no more submissions to UNIQA - we charge directly to UNIQA if you present your LARA direct settlement card!

The costs for the circumcision of a male infant usually amount to the surgical fee of the surgical group II or III of the agreed contract between the Austrian Versicherungsverband and the Austrian Medical Chamber. These rates are subject to change and can be viewed on the homepage of the Vienna Medical Association under "Medical Activity", "Fees".
In Vienna, you usually have to pay €2500 to €4500 for a circumcision from a specialist, depending on the requirements (hospital/ consultation facility /home circumcision; anesthesia; age of the child; technique; etc.), whereby this high difference depends primarily on whether the circumcision is performed in a hospital or not. There are also "circumcisers" in Vienna, who are well known and often not even doctors, who work without a bill, sometimes against "donation", often with results that represent a stigma for later life or have to be repaired in a complicated way in hospital, but unfortunately are hardly ever pursued.
In the total amount, the surgeon's fee is only a small part, the rest is made up of the fees for the daily admission to the hospital, op room usage fee, costs for medication, care and anesthesia.
Remember that if you want to be treated according to the demands of modern safe and high-quality medicine, this effort must be rewarded. You only have this operation performed on your son once in a lifetime and you want a perfect result and the greatest possible safety for your child - this can only be guaranteed within the appropriate framework. Your hairdresser or the service of your car often costs more and you don't let that be done by a botcher in the backyard?
The man's penis is usually not exposed to public view, but errors in circumcision, both aesthetic/cosmetic and functional, can later cause psychological problems or even complete failure.
Please remember that this operation is generally NOT paid for by insurance companies, unless it is clearly medically indicated, or a goodwill assumption is agreed beforehand.
Socially deprived patients can get socially graduated special rates after consultation with me; please talk to me FIRST.

PEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT SURGERY Prof. Paya has decades of experience in the field of premature infants, babies, children and adolescent surgery. Due to his age, he belongs to a generation that in their training had to stand day and night in the operating theatre and operate everything, thus combining safety, extensive skills and a high level of knowledge in surgical diagnostics and therapy. Please contact Dr. Paya in all pediatric surgical matters; we will find the optimal medical solution for your specific needs.
CIRCUMCISION
The male circumcision is not a beginner operation and should not be performed by a quack. The result is in most cases not correctable and therefore the operation should always be put in the hands of a professional. Prof.Paya is a specialist in Austria and is known far beyond the borders for religious, hygienic or medically indicated circumcision of the foreskin in boys and men. We offer quick appointments, painless, sterile, state-of-the-art technology, with or without anesthesia.
HERNIA IN INFANCY
The hernia in children occurs relatively frequently and very often affects infants. It differs significantly from inguinal hernia in adults and should therefore only be treated by trained pediatric surgeons or surgeons with extensive experience in pediatric surgery. Since the infantile inguinal hernia is almost always congenital, the treatment consists of closing the open inguinal canal. In boys, very delicate blood vessels, the spermatic duct, nerves and fibres travel to and from the testicles. Special attention should be paid to these structures, here we usually operate with magnifying glasses. The operation is technically complex, but in experienced hands it takes only a short time and requires only a very short stay in hospital. The little patients are pain-free after the operation and can leave the hospital the day after the operation. Prof.Paya is an outstanding specialist for hernia operations and can assist you with advice and support. We also offer day clinic surgery (outpatient) in a pleasant atmosphere without stress in the private sphere (self-payer or additional insurance).
APPENDECTOMY
Appendicitis is usually a disease of adolescents. The diagnosis is made by the typical abdominal pain, vomiting, increased inflammatory parameters in the blood, the sonographic evidence or an MRI examination. Prof.Paya looks back on long experience and hundreds of appendectomies. He successfully used the minimally invasive method in infants for the first time in Austria for severe appendicitis in infants. With this method, a long stay in hospital and "difficult" operations, wound infections and ugly scars can often be avoided. Today already standard worldwide, Prof.Paya is one of the pioneers of this method in infants.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT APPENDICITIS:
Appendicitis is usually a purulent inflammation of the appendix at the beginning of the colon. This is typically located in the area of the right lower abdomen. Appendicitis often occurs in adolescence and manifests itself by pain in the right lower abdomen, loss of appetite and vomiting.
DIAGNOSIS
The diagnosis is often not easy. It is supported by ultrasound and laboratory diagnostics. But even CT scans (X-rays) and MRIs (magnetic field-no X-rays, which is why I prefer them for children and young people) are routinely used today. Men are more frequently affected, but women are operated on more often. This is due to the fact that pain in the area of the right lower abdomen is much more frequent in women (cause is e.g. ovary, fallopian tubes, etc) and it is difficult to distinguish it from appendicitis.

Surgery should always be performed if appendicitis is suspected. If the operation is not performed in time, abscess formation in the abdomen can occur with catastrophic consequences. The operation itself has only little risk with an experienced surgeon today, that is why the principle applies: in case of doubt, the operation should be performed.
However, it is almost never an absolute emergency, so there is always time for careful diagnosis. Today, rates of about 10-25% in pediatric surgery for patients who have undergone surgery but who have not actually had appendicitis are considered an acceptable standard.

The advantages of the minimally invasive technique are: shorter hospital stay, less pain, faster convalescence, hardly any visible scars, usually even lower costs.
The advantages of the alternating cut (incision in the right lower abdomen) are the availability at all times and the easier proven surgical technique even for inexperienced surgeons.
Prof.Paya introduced the minimally invasive appendectomy at the Vienna Department of Pediatric Surgery of the University Hospital of Surgery, published scientific papers on it and has already successfully performed several hundred such operations.

OPERATION
There are now two recognized surgical methods: Gridiron incision (traditional skin incision) and laparoscopy (buttonhole surgery). Which method is used depends on the patient's wishes, the hospital's facilities and the availability of a surgeon experienced in both methods. Especially in cases of advanced inflammation or very unclear diagnosis, laparoscopy should be reserved for experienced surgeons or pediatric surgeons. In some cases, new technical achievements and devices allow the operation to be performed through a single small incision in the navel.

Frequently Asked Questions
I specialize mainly in pediatric surgery. This means that if you have a child and this child has a surgical problem (appendicitis, hernia, desire for circumcision, congenital malformations, etc.) you are in each case right to come to me.
I have particularly specialized in the treatment of appendicitis. I have written a textbook chapter on it. I have been using minimally invasive techniques for appendectomy since the early 1990s and this is a special field of research that I have taught many pediatric surgeons in Vienna as part of my teaching activities. Furthermore, I have decades of experience in thousands of cases of hernia operations in infants and circumcision of boys.
Even such mundane but very common and very annoying problems like ingrown toenails I treat with special care and with techniques that I have especially adapted successfully.
The pediatric surgeon's most important partners are therefore pediatricians, pediatric radiologists and pediatric anesthesiologists.
This means that you can choose the doctor (in all non-public hospitals) you trust or the specialist you want as your surgeon. This gives you the guarantee of treatment by a medical doctor who is experienced and usually takes his time. You will then be looked after personally by this doctor and this costs much more than the statutory health insurance pays. These additional costs are covered by the private supplementary insurance.
In addition, your hospital room must meet certain minimum standards in case of an inpatient stay. Depending on the tariff you choose, you are also entitled to a double or single room ("hotel component"). However, you should not overestimate this, because nowadays in-patient stays are kept as short as possible and good medical treatment is certainly much more important than a few days of hotel character in a hospital room.
By the way, we are LARA partners of UNIQA and can therefore settle accounts directly with UNIQA for these patients.
However, if you want to be absolutely sure that you or your child will only be operated on by a doctor you trust and that the anaesthesia will also be carried out by an anaesthetist selected by me, I can treat (operate on) you in one of Vienna's modern private clinics.
I introduced minimally invasive surgery ("buttonhole surgery") for infants against great resistance at the University Clinic of Vienna and have also successfully applied it, for example, in advanced appendicitis. Many surgeons have learned this surgical technique from me.
As with adults, this method also results in shorter hospital stays, less pain and fewer large, visible scars in children.
